Text Box:  EDITORIAL

The days darken now as we move into the winter months, perhaps a more contemplative time of the year. The farce of Halloween is past and I hope all will be buying their poppies for remembrance Sunday. There is much debate in the Heathen world at the moment as to how we should be represented, what we should be called and the like, but the important thing is to keep our heads above water, waving, not drowning. Persistence will pay off. (Alan Nash)

Viking Waterford Still Under Question

The Chairperson of the Save Viking Waterford Action Group, Dr. Catherine Swift  has strongly criticised Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche for the failure of his  department to appoint its representative to the proposed Strategic Management  Committee on the future of the Woodstown Viking Site. In reference to Minister Roche’s announcement on the 11th of May this year that ~ he intended to establish the committee, Dr Swift said: "It sounded great at the time, and we as a group campaigning for the excavation of Woodstown were very  positive about this development. When it was revealed that Dr Patrick Wallace  was to be the National Museum’s representative and Eamon McEneaney was  there to represent the Granary and Waterford City Council, it seemed that after  months of government prevarication we were finally getting somewhere".

The Save Viking Waterford Action Group is to hold what is the third lecture in the series of talks on Viking Heritage by internationally renowned experts. The lecture entitled ‘Viking Settlement From Woodquay to Woodstown’ will take place on Thursday 25th November at 8.00pm in the Tower Hotel, The Mall, Waterford. The speaker will be Emer Purcell of University College Cork. All members of the public are invited to attend the lecture.Emer Purcell did her initial degree and her Masters in University College Dublin, specialising in the archaeology and history of Viking Age Ireland. Her Masters thesis is on the history of the Viking settlement of Oxmantown, north of the Liffey and her publications include her book, “A Short History Of Winetavern Street And It’s Environs,” (on the bank of the River Suir near Waterford City, which was first excavated by archaeologists in April 2003 in preparation for the N25 Waterford Bypass.

Archaeology on the Web

Culture Minister David Lammy has announced the launch by the Portable Antiquities Scheme of an interactive website, PAStexplorers.org.uk, which will provide children and teachers with information about archaeological finds. The PAS is the largest community archaeology project in the UK. It was established in 1997 and is funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Its aim is to encourage the voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by the public.

HFP Under Pressure

The Heathen Organisation HFP, which claims to represent Heathens to the British Government have been under much pressure from all sides recently, receiving criticism from Heathens all over. The main point of contention seems to be how they represent heathens – many feel they are faceless names on a website, and others that they do little but issue outdated surveys which would be more akin to historical re-enactment than modern religion. The debate has been raging on the UK Heathenry yahoo group for some weeks.

Battle of Hastings (Again)

A re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings will take place on October 14-15 2006 on the site of the original battle. Participants from all over the world will be taking part and staying in the Living History encampment. The Viking Re-enactment Society have been appointed as hosts. They were founded in 1971 and now boast the largest membership of any re-enactment group. For further information visit http://hastings .vikingsonline.org.uk

Text Box:  COMMENT

Comparative mythology is always a contentious subject, especially with hard polytheists. Many do not see the point in looking for cross-cultural patterns. Gun Westholm recently wrote about how the Aesir Gods have distinct parallels in Greek Mythology (Viking Heritage – 3/05), yet the Vanir seem to be home-grown in Northern Europe, being earth deities as opposed to the warrior gods of the Aesir. Admittedly, such research is normally carried out by non-religious academics, thus their findings are not always relevant to practitioners of the Heathen faith. Heathenism is a complete religion and needs little input from other cultures, but as a middle ground I would suggest is possible to at least be ‘informed’ by other traditions, if not guided. It is entirely possible to view all religions as a reflection of spiritual truths, and to single out one or a few as reflecting those truths better than others. This does not mean we are required to compare deities like-for-like and agree or disagree with their being the same as each other. I would suggest it is possible to reach a middle ground, agreeing to agree or disagree on some points, but learning from others where we feel it is necessary and proper. Thus in the light of reports about the Tibetan Book of the Dead, we could look at it sideways, take it on board and learn from it, or dig in our heels and refuse to admit that it is of any interest to us as spiritual beings. I know which I would prefer. (Alan Nash – 2005).

Text Box:   REVIEWS

Vinland Saga, by Leaves Eyes (CD)

Having listened to other CD’s supposedly telling the tales of Vikings or our sagas and being very disappointed, I can say that this CD is absolutely brilliant. Each song tells the tale of our ancestors as they travelled to a new land. There is also the secondary story of a couple, parted as the man goes ‘a-viking’ and the woman is left in their home land. The hauntingly beautiful voice of Liv Kristine Espenoes Krull gives real feeling to the music, and fans of Nightwish will love this too. The CD is well worth a listen, with songs such as ‘Farewell Proud Men,’ ‘Elegy,’ and ‘New Found Land.’ Leaves eyes also have their own website: www.leaveseyes.com, and the CD is available from Amazon.co.uk. (Freya Nash – 2005)
