The Althing

History:

The first annual Althing was held in July 2002, at Ormswald Cultural Sanctuary and the intention was that it would be repeated yearly. Althing was an opportunity for all Full Members of the Kith to meet to discuss and debate any issue that affects the Kith as a whole. It was also a chance to meet members who live in distant parts of the UK. In the first year, for example, we had a very welcome Scottish contingent present.

Since the Kith is a community-based organisation as much as anything else, Althing was seen as an opportunity to re-forge old friendships and to make new ones, with the business in hand being dealt with quickly enough for feasting and talking around the campfire until late into the night.

The first Steering Committee was elected at the 2002 Althing, as the structure and Goals and Remit of the Kith were decided by democratic vote. One of our main objectives for 2003 year was to confirm our Constitution, which was put to the membership for ratification at the 2003 Althing which took place at Ormswald on the 26th and 27th of July.

The Future:

Following changes made to the Kith in 2004, we decided to hold a Gathering from 2005 rather than the Althing.

Further changes are planned from 2007, but the details are not yet finalised (March). We will post more information as it becomes available.
